AirPods Problems and Fixes: Pairing, Battery, Sound

Most AirPods problems have one of four causes: a connection that needs a fresh pairing, a flat or dirty charging case, a blocked speaker mesh or a setting such as Automatic Ear Detection, or AirPods that need a reset. Find your symptom in the table below. Each row gives the most likely cause and the first fix, then links to the full steps for your model. To fix earbuds and headphones from other brands, start from the family hub instead.
AirPods fixes differ by model. AirPods 4, AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3 use a double-tap on the front of the case where older cases have a setup button on the back, so check your model first. If the trouble started right after an update, read AirPods Not Connecting and the firmware section below.
Find Your AirPods Problem: Symptom, Cause and First Fix
The table lists 16 AirPods symptoms in the order people search for them, with the most likely cause and the first fix Apple's support pages give for each.

AirPods Won't Connect or Keep Disconnecting
AirPods that won't connect need Apple's nine-step order, and pairing again sits near the end of it. Update your iPhone, iPad or Mac first. Put both AirPods in the case and confirm they charge. Check that Bluetooth is on. Take the AirPods out, put them in your ears and look for them in Control Center. If they are missing from the list, or listed but silent, put them back in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it and pair again. A reset comes last. How to Connect AirPods to Any Device
AirPods pair with any Bluetooth device, but features like automatic setup and Siri need an Apple device. The table gives Apple's official route for each host and the page with the full steps.

Every host needs the AirPods in pairing mode first.
How to Put AirPods in Pairing Mode
Pairing mode on AirPods depends on the case. AirPods 1, 2 and 3 and AirPods Pro 1 and 2 enter pairing mode when you hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white. AirPods 4, AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3 have no setup button: double-tap the front of the case until the light flashes white. AirPods Max enter pairing mode when you hold the listening mode button until the light flashes white. The light only flashes if the case has charge. AirPods or Charging Case Not Charging?
The charging case is the AirPods battery, so most charging problems are case problems. Apple's order for AirPods that won't charge: connect the case to power with the cable that came with it, charge for at least 15 minutes, then check the battery on your iPhone. A wireless charging case shows its status light for a few seconds when you set it on the charger. If the case still shows nothing, try a different cable and adapter, then clean the charging port and the earbud contacts. A reset is the last step before contacting Apple. How to Reset AirPods (and When Someone Else's Apple Account Blocks You)
A restart turns the AirPods off and on and keeps every setting; a reset erases the pairing and your settings, and you pair the AirPods again afterwards. Restart first: put both AirPods in the case and close the lid. Reset only if the restart changes nothing. The reset control matches the pairing control: the setup button on older cases, a double-tap on the front of AirPods 4, AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3, and the listening mode button on AirPods Max. One AirPod Not Working, Quiet or Muffled?
One silent AirPod usually means one flat earbud or an off-centre balance. Put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds and confirm on your iPhone that each one is charging. Then open Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual and check that the Balance slider sits in the centre. If sound is still quiet or muffled on one side, clean the speaker mesh. Noise Cancelling, Microphone or Pausing Problems
Noise cancelling, microphone and pausing problems come from settings, not damage. Active Noise Cancellation exists on AirPods Pro 1, 2 and 3, AirPods 4 (ANC), both AirPods 5 models and AirPods Max, so check the listening mode first: it has to say Noise Cancellation, not Transparency or Off. The microphone follows the setting under Settings → your AirPods → Microphone, which switches between Automatically Switch AirPods, Always Left AirPod and Always Right AirPod. Which AirPods Do I Have? Model Identifier
Your AirPods model number sits in Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ next to your AirPods, or printed on the underside of each earbud; on AirPods Max it sits behind the cushion on the left ear cup. Apple names the fourth generation "AirPods 4" and "AirPods 4 (ANC)"; there is no "AirPods 4 Pro". Turn AirPods On and Off, and AirPods Max Power
AirPods have no power step in Apple's connection order: you take the AirPods out of the case, put them in your ears and pick them in Control Center. Apple's restart is the same motion in reverse: both AirPods back in the case, lid closed. AirPods Stopped Working After an Update?
AirPods firmware installs on its own: Apple says updates install while your AirPods charge in their case and sit in Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad or Mac that is connected to Wi-Fi. You cannot start the update by hand, but you can check your version under Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ next to your AirPods → About.
