Body Battery is Garmin's energy gauge: a score from 5 to 100 that estimates your energy reserves through the day from heart rate variability, stress, sleep and activity.
This covers device settings only and isn't medical advice.
Garmin's vívoactive 5 manual compares Body Battery to a gas gauge on a car: it shows your available reserve energy, not the charge left in the watch. If you mean the watch's own battery, see Garmin watch battery draining fast. For problems with the watch itself, such as pairing or syncing, start at Garmin watch troubleshooting. Garmin's activity tracking notice states that its wearables are not medical devices. Apple Watch owners looking for setup help can customize Apple Watch faces in the Apple Watch guides.

How Garmin Body Battery Works
Garmin Body Battery works by "continuously analyzing combinations of heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV) and movement data while you wear your device", in Garmin's words. From that data, the watch works out whether you're awake or asleep, when you're physically active, and your stress level during periods of inactivity.
Stress decides whether the score charges or drains. Garmin's all-day stress tracking measures stress on a scale from 0 to 100, and stress levels below 25 count as rest:
| Stress level | Body Battery |
|---|---|
| 0 to 25 (rest) | Charging |
| 25 to 100 | Draining |
Higher stress drains your energy reserves more quickly. Activity drains the score too: Garmin says vigorous exercise depletes your daily energy faster than lighter efforts, and the duration of the activity also counts. Energy builds back during restful moments of inactivity and while you sleep, and the vívoactive 5 manual adds that food and stimulants such as caffeine have no impact on it.
In Garmin Connect, Body Battery also shows Charged (the energy your body recovered) and Drained (the energy your body used). Both are calculated over a 24-hour period and reset at midnight.
What the Body Battery Numbers Mean
Garmin's vívoactive 5 manual splits the 5 to 100 range into four bands of reserve energy:
| Body Battery level | Garmin's label |
|---|---|
| 5 to 25 | Very low reserve energy |
| 26 to 50 | Low reserve energy |
| 51 to 75 | Medium reserve energy |
| 76 to 100 | High reserve energy |
We checked these labels in the vívoactive 5 manual only, so look in your own model's manual for its wording. The bands describe the gauge, not your health.
Which Garmin Watches Have Body Battery
Garmin says Body Battery is available on many Garmin wearables, and its rule for any model is to search for "Body Battery" in your owner's manual. The table is narrower than that. It lists the watches Garmin names for Body Battery TrueUp, which keeps Body Battery data in sync across multiple Garmin products.
Watches Garmin lists for Body Battery syncing across devices (TrueUp):
| Watch family | Models on Garmin's list |
|---|---|
| Forerunner | 70, 165 series, 170 series, 255 series, 265 series, 570, 955 series, 965, 970 |
| fēnix | fēnix 7 Pro series, fēnix 8 series, fēnix 9 series, fēnix E |
| Instinct | Instinct 2X series, Instinct 3 series, Instinct Crossover AMOLED series, Instinct E |
| Venu | Venu 3 series, Venu 4, Venu X1 |
| vívoactive | vívoactive 5, vívoactive 6 |
| Lily | Lily 2 series |
| Approach | Approach S62, Approach S70 series |
| D2 | D2 Air X15, D2 Mach 1 Pro, D2 Mach 2 series |
| Descent | Descent G1 series, Descent G2, Descent Mk3 series |
| Enduro, epix, MARQ | Enduro 3, epix Pro (Gen 2) series, MARQ Adventurer (Gen 2) series |
| quatix, tactix | quatix 7 Pro, quatix 8 series, tactix 7 AMOLED, tactix 8 series |
| vívomove | vívomove Trend |
The same list names two devices that aren't watches, the CIRQA smart band and the Index sleep monitor. Garmin also says a device that isn't on the list can still update Body Battery in Garmin Connect, so a missing model is a reason to check the manual, not proof it lacks the feature.
How to See Your Body Battery
On a vívoactive 5, the Body Battery glance shows your current level:
- Swipe up or down to the Body Battery glance. You may need to add it to your glance loop first.
- Select the glance to see a graph of your Body Battery data since midnight.
- Swipe up to see a combined graph of your Body Battery and stress level.
Sync the watch with your Garmin Connect account to see the most up-to-date level, long-term trends and the Charged and Drained values. Glance names and buttons differ between models, and the Garmin pages we read document no on or off switch for Body Battery, so check your model's manual. Garmin's tip is to wear the watch while you sleep.

Common Body Battery Problems
These are device behaviors Garmin documents. None of them says anything about your health.
Body Battery Stuck at 5
Body Battery can sit at or near 5 on a new watch or after a factory reset. Garmin says the feature needs a learning period to set your personal baseline, and this period typically lasts 5 to 7 days; until enough data is collected, the score may stay at or near 5. Garmin also describes a recalibration: if the baseline is lost, Body Battery may drain to 5 and stay there, and the automatic process can take several days.
Body Battery Low After Sleeping
Body Battery can stay low after a full night because it considers more than sleep duration, including stress levels and your body's overall recovery. Garmin says high stress levels during sleep can reduce how much it recharges. Garmin's list of factors that may increase stress includes bright lights, alcohol consumption, extreme temperatures, loud noises, and frequent waking, tossing or turning during sleep.
Gaps When You Take the Watch Off
Short breaks off the wrist don't stop the score: Garmin says Body Battery can estimate charging and draining during short periods when the device is not worn. After several hours or longer, it resumes from a model-based estimate when you put the watch back on. Data from Garmin devices that don't support Body Battery isn't included in the calculation.
Is Body Battery the Same as the Watch's Battery?
No. Body Battery is Garmin's estimate of your energy reserves, and the charge left in the watch is separate. If the watch itself runs down quickly, the Garmin battery drain guide linked at the top of this page covers that.

Body Battery Questions
Four short answers, each taken from Garmin's own documentation.
What is Body Battery on a Garmin watch?
Body Battery on a Garmin watch is an energy score from 5 to 100 that estimates your energy reserves through the day, built from heart rate variability, stress, sleep and activity levels. You see it on the watch, for example on the vívoactive 5's Body Battery glance, and in your Garmin Connect account.
How does Garmin measure Body Battery?
Garmin measures Body Battery by analyzing heart rate, heart rate variability and movement data while you wear the watch. Stress levels below 25 count as rest and charge it, higher stress and activity drain it, and energy builds back during restful inactivity and sleep.
What do Garmin Body Battery numbers mean?
Garmin Body Battery numbers fall into four bands in the vívoactive 5 manual: 5 to 25 very low, 26 to 50 low, 51 to 75 medium and 76 to 100 high reserve energy. The bands describe the gauge, not your health.
Why is my Garmin Body Battery always low?
Garmin documents two reasons a Body Battery can stay low: a new or reset watch still in its 5 to 7 day learning period, or high stress, including stress during sleep, that reduces how much it recharges. Garmin also asks you to wear the device as consistently as possible throughout the day and night.
